AVG Anti-Virus Recovery Procedure:

Recovering from a virus infection?

If you believe that you have been infected by a virus:

DO NOT download a new virus checker on to your computer

DO NOT INSERT removable media into your computer (diskettes/zip disks etc)

DO create a set of rescue disks ON AN UNAFFECTED COMPUTER,

even if this means using somebody else's machine!

We have found that it is possible to create resue disks from different versions of 95/98 for use on other machines!

We have not tested this for NT.

REMEMBER all Floppies and Zip disks, etc. that you have used may also be infected - so do not use until they are checked!

All anti-virus checkers have a slightly different method of creating rescue disks. Here are the instructions for making an AVG Rescue set:

***DO NOT USE YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU THINK IT HAS A VIRUS!***

1. Make sure that you have 2 blank formated floppy disks ready.

(NOT FORMATTED ON YOUR OWN COMPUTER). Insert the first floppy in the disk drive.

2. Click on Start -> Programs -> AVG Anti-Virus-free edition -> AVG 6.0 for Windows

3.Click on the menu item 'Service' -> 'Create Rescue Disk'

4.Click on the 'Create Rescue Disk' button

5. Click on the 'Create' button

6. click on the 'Format it' button

7. In the format type section click on 'full'

8. In the other options section click on 'copy system files'

9. Click on start (Diskette will now start to format)

10. Click on 'close'

11. Click on 'close' again

12. When you get the 'Next Floppy Disk' box, remove the floppy from the drive AND WRITE PROTECT IT.

13. Insert the second floppy and click on the 'Format it' button

14. In the format type section click on 'full'

15. In the other options section make sure that 'copy system files' is not checked

16. Click on start (Diskette will now start to format)

17. Click on 'close'

18. Click on 'close' again

19. The AVG Anti-Virus rescue disk will now be created

20. Click on 'Ok'

21. Remove the floppy from the drive AND WRITE PROTECT IT.

22. Lable the disks with todays date and AVG Rescue disks 1 and 2

23. Boot your own computer with disk 1 in your floppy disk drive

and follow the on screen instructions.

IF you got virused - think why that happened?

Did you regularly update your virus checker?

Did you regularly back up your data?

Did you think that the e-mails that AVG sent you were not really that important?

DO update and maintain your virus checker and ensure you keep separate copies of important data outside of your computer's hard disk!

If you feel unable to deal with the above processes - contact us through our Support Centre - and we will see what we can do!

Get/Update the AVG Virus Checker:

Notice: Users should be aware that the period of support for AVG Free version 6 will be ending at the discretion of the developers, as per their website.

If you are currently using AVG6 Free Edition, please bear in mind that viral update support will be discontinued for this program in the future.

See www.grisoft.com for more information.

We strongly recommend that anyone using a computer, especially a Windows PC, use some form of up-to-date anti-virus software at all times

AVG Anti-Virus is a pretty good virus checker that we have come across.

You can download the free version of this program from HERE

If you have AVG you will have two icons, one on your desktop and one beside the clock on your toolbar. The first process you should do is click on either to check if you require an update:

1. Open AVG.

2. Click on the Update Tab and wait for a minute or so. AVG will tell you whether or not you require an update.

The recommended way to get an update is directly from the Grisoft site.

Notice: The method for retrieving updates for AVG has been altered. Individual updates are now being supplied incrementally, and as such are now much smaller downloads.

We will not be archiving the updates on our site anymore.

Incremental updates for AVG 6 Free Edition can be retrieved directly from www.grisoft.com. To use the new system, your AVG program must be patched to version 518. The update below will bring your virus checker up to this version if it is not already so. Please use the built in updater for AVG from then on. For instructions see their website

.

To collect an update file from us use the desktop AVG icon. From the Menu bar go to Service, then Update and click on the button "From A Folder".

This file will update AVG to the program version required to use the new incremental updates only.

After installing it, you must use the online update facility of AVG 6, or retrieve the updates from the grisoft website from now on.

This update is valid for viruses released before (17/09/03) only. Click here to download

Install the update as follows:

Click on Start -> Programs -> AVG Anti-Virus-free edition -> AVG 6.0 for Windows

Click on the menu item 'Service' -> update

Click on the button 'Update'

Pick the folder on your hard disk, that you saved the update file to.

Click on 'OK'

The new update will load (This does take a few seconds to start!)

Once loaded, you may be asked to reboot your computer.

When your computer restarts, AVG Anti-Virus will start.

Click on 'Run Complete Test'

This will check your computer for the latest viruses.

Perform an online update to bring your AVG up-to-date.
